Don't throw it away - Freecycle it

i've often wondered about this. how efficient is it? You can't beat craigslist for the speed in which people will descend on free stuff, and that's really the only friction when it comes to giving stuff away. how well does it work? and have you every gotten anything from it?
It pretty comparable to CL. People are quick to respond and similarly flaky. For a while, I was getting the messages in digest form so any item I saw was already spoken for. I turned off the messages and instead just post to give stuff away.
[this is good]
I've used it over here in the UK. It's works fine although some of the items I've seen offered should really have been thrown away. At least it does something to break the Shop-Dump-Shop-Dump cycle which is so disheartening to see.
I hear there's a similar scheme running in Swedish cities where many people live in large apartment blocks. Apparently they have an area in many of these where residents take their unwanted goods. The other residents can then retrieve stuff they want. Once a month the items that are left over are collected by the waste disposal teams.
