You probably already saw the video of mentos + coke (http://www.eepybird.com/exp10.html). I believe that originally, the guys did it for the fun of it. Well, coke found out and embraced the guys and helped them take it to the next level through sponsorship. Now we get http://www.eepybird.com/exp214.html. This is great example of viral marketing by recognizing something cool that users are doing with a product and embracing their efforts.
Then there’s the opposite. This kid decided to furnish his whole apartment with furniture made from FedEx packing materials. http://www.fedexfurniture.com/ What was the FedEx genius response? To sick the attorneys after the guy. As my wife, Itzel, pointed out, this is such a wasted opportunity! They should have offered him everything needed to distribute videos documenting his efforts and created some clever marketing tags based on it. Yeah, sure, people don’t pay for the packing materials and they don’t want folks to start using them for other things, but come on! The cost of a few copycats (and it would be a few because nobody’s going to this extreme of making furniture) would probably be much less than an add on TV and the positive buzz would be way better. Right now, the buzz is “FexEx are assholes.”
